Travel (السفر)

Surat 'Āli `Imrān (Family of Imran), Chapter 3, Verse 137:

"Many similar ways (and mishaps of life) were faced by nations (believers and disbelievers) that have passed away before you (as you have faced in the battle of Uhud), so travel through the earth, and see what was the end of those who disbelieved (in the Oneness of Allah, and disobeyed Him and His Messengers)." (Quran 3:137)

Surat Al-'An`ām (The Cattle), Chapter 6, Verse 11:

Say, "Travel through the land; then observe how was the end of the deniers." (Quran 6:11)

Surat 'Āli `Imrān (Family of Imran), Chapter 3, Verse 156:

"O you who have believed, do not be like those who disbelieved and said about their brothers when they traveled through the land or went out to fight, "If they had been with us, they would not have died or have been killed," so Allah makes that [misconception] a regret within their hearts. And it is Allah who gives life and causes death, and Allah is Seeing of what you do." (Quran 3:156)

Traveller  (مُسَافِر)

Surat Al-Baqarah (The Cow), chapter 2, verse 177:

"Righteousness is not that you turn your faces toward the east or the west, but [true] righteousness is [in] one who believes in Allah , the Last Day, the angels, the Book, and the prophets and gives wealth, in spite of love for it, to relatives, orphans, the needy, the traveler, those who ask [for help], and for freeing slaves; [and who] establishes prayer and gives zakah; [those who] fulfill their promise when they promise; and [those who] are patient in poverty and hardship and during battle. Those are the ones who have been true, and it is those who are the righteous." (Quran 2:177)

Surat Al-Baqarah (The Cow), Chapter 2, Verse 215:

"They ask you, [O Muhammad], what they should spend. Say, "Whatever you spend of good is [to be] for parents and relatives and orphans and the needy and the traveler. And whatever you do of good - indeed, Allah is Knowing of it." (Quran 2:215)

Surat An-Nisā' (The Women), Chapter 4, Verse 36:

"Worship Allah and associate nothing with Him, and to parents do good, and to relatives, orphans, the needy, the near neighbor, the neighbor farther away, the companion at your side, the traveler, and those whom your right hands possess. Indeed, Allah does not like those who are self-deluding and boastful." (Quran 4:36)

Surat At-Tawbah (The Repentance), Chapter 9, Verse 60:

"Zakah expenditures are only for the poor and for the needy and for those employed to collect [zakah] and for bringing hearts together [for Islam] and for freeing captives [or slaves] and for those in debt and for the cause of Allah and for the [stranded] traveler - an obligation [imposed] by Allah . And Allah is Knowing and Wise." (Quran 9:60)

Surat At-Tawbah (The Repentance), Chapter 9, Verse 112:

"[Such believers are] the repentant, the worshippers, the praisers [of Allah ], the travelers [for His cause], those who bow and prostrate [in prayer], those who enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong, and those who observe the limits [set by] Allah . And give good tidings to the believers." (Quran 9:112)

Surat Yūnus (Jonah), Chapter 10, Verse 22:

"It is He who enables you to travel on land and sea until, when you are in ships and they sail with them by a good wind and they rejoice therein, there comes a storm wind and the waves come upon them from everywhere and they assume that they are surrounded, supplicating Allah , sincere to Him in religion, "If You should save us from this, we will surely be among the thankful." (Quran 10:22)

Travel to Save Lives

Surat Hūd (Hud), Chapter 11, Verse 81:

"They (Messengers) said: "O Lout (Lot)! Verily, we are the Messengers from your Lord! They shall not reach you!So travel with your family in a part of the night, and let not any of you look back, but your wife (will remain behind), verily, the punishment which will afflict them, will afflict her. Indeed, morning is their appointed time. Is not the morning near?" (Quran 11:81)

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "Three supplications are answered without doubt. The supplication of the oppressed, the supplication of the traveller, and the supplication of the parent for his son." [At- Tirmidhi and Abu Dawud].

Surat Al-Baqarah (The Cow), Chapter 2, Verse 273:

"(Charity is) for Fuqara (the poor), who in Allah's Cause are restricted (from travel), and cannot move about in the land (for trade or work). The one who knows them not, thinks that they are rich because of their modesty. You may know them by their mark, they do not beg of people at all. And whatever you spend in good, surely Allah knows it well." (Quran 2:273)

Surat Al-'Anfāl (The Spoils of War), Chapter 8, Verse 41:

"And know that anything you obtain of war booty - then indeed, for Allah is one fifth of it and for the Messenger and for [his] near relatives and the orphans, the needy, and the [stranded] traveler, if you have believed in Allah and in that which We sent down to Our Servant on the day of criterion - the day when the two armies met. And Allah , over all things, is competent." (Quran 8:41)

Surat At-Tawbah (The Repentance), Chapter 9, Verse 2:

"So travel freely, [O disbelievers], throughout the land [during] four months but know that you cannot cause failure to Allah and that Allah will disgrace the disbelievers." (Quran 9:2)

Exception [Rukhsah (رخصة)] in Traveling

Surat An-Nisā' (The Women), Chapter 4, Verse 43:

"O you who have believed, do not approach prayer while you are intoxicated until you know what you are saying or in a state of janabah, except those passing through [a place of prayer], until you have washed [your whole body]. And if you are ill or on a journey or one of you comes from the place of relieving himself or you have contacted women and find no water, then seek clean earth and wipe over your faces and your hands [with it]. Indeed, Allah is ever Pardoning and Forgiving." (Quran 4:43)

Surat An-Nisā' (The Women), Chapter 4, Verse 101:

"And when you travel throughout the land, there is no blame upon you for shortening the prayer, [especially] if you fear that those who disbelieve may disrupt [or attack] you." (Quran 4: 101)

Surat Al-Mā'idah (The Table Spread), Chapter 5, Verse 96:

"Lawful to you is game from the sea and its food as provision for you and the travelers, but forbidden to you is game from the land as long as you are in the state of ihram. And fear Allah to whom you will be gathered." (Quran 5:96)

Surat Al-Mā'idah (The Table Spread), Chapter 5, Verse 106:

"O you who have believed, testimony [should be taken] among you when death approaches one of you at the time of bequest - [that of] two just men from among you or two others from outside if you are traveling through the land and the disaster of death should strike you. Detain them after the prayer and let them both swear by Allah if you doubt [their testimony, saying], "We will not exchange our oath for a price, even if he should be a near relative, and we will not withhold the testimony of Allah . Indeed, we would then be of the sinful." (Quran 5:106)
